Thanks to the explosion of experimental films and web shows, Khans and Kapoor no longer rule the Indian entertainment industry. 2021 was a year when we enjoyed the concept of anthology. 2021 was also a year that proved that if sequels to hit shows are made and executed well, the audience will continue to deliver the same amount of love and appreciation.
A few characters also managed to outshine their lead actors by proving that it’s talent that genuinely matters.
Before 2021 ends, here’s a closer look at all the characters we loved. These characters didn’t just become popular on social media and start meme-fests; these characters also made fans demand a spin-off. With Bob Biswas, a fictional character making a comeback as a full-throttle movie, we wonder if some of our favourite fictional characters from 2021 could headline a show, movie or at least a particular video?
Who are you rooting for? Have a look at our list of shortlisted 11!
1. JK Talpade from The Family Man
Played by Sharib Hashmi
In Amazon Prime Video’s hit franchise ‘The Family Man’, A happy-go-lucky intelligence officer JK Talpade won our hearts. The success of season two proves we as fans want more from the characters, especially Talpade.
2. Bhanu Pratap Pandey from Mimi
Played by Pankaj Tripathi
Bhanu Pratap had a heart of gold in Mimi. In Kriti Sanon’s film, Tripathi proved that he could get into the skin of any character and make it lovable. Won’t it be a delight to watch Bhanu reprising his role as a selfless taxi driver again? Even his banter with his wife would be worth enjoying on the small or big screen.
3. Shwet Ketu Jha from TVF Aspirants
Played by Abhilash Thapliyal
The show might be named Aspirants, but it was no less than a heartwarming story of friendship, break up and losing touch with old friends. Abhilash Thapliyal as Shwet Ketu Jha wasn’t just an inspiring character who chose to turn his defeat into victory by becoming a teacher, but his dialogues and the way he wears his heart on the sleeve made us long for more.
4. Sandeep Bhaiya: TVF Aspirants
Played by Sunny Hinduja
Sandeep Bhaiya’s career and dynamic graph in the limited series are what makes him a unique character.
A simple man who is highly motivated and ready to rectify mistakes after realising them makes him humane and admirable. The show garnered a lot of popularity because of Sandeep Bhaiya, as we saw a flood of memes taking over the internet post-release of the show. If there ever is a spin-off of Sandeep Bhaiya, I am betting all my money. Are you?
5. Chellam Sir: The Family Man
Played by Uday Mahesh
If you’re a Family Man fan, you know why Chellam Sir has made a cut on this list.
Portrayed by Tamil actor Uday Mahesh, the character’s popularity can be easily evaluated because he made heads turn despite a heavily star-studded cast, including actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Samantha Akkineni and Priyamani. The portrayal had impressed the audience to the extent that several social media users immediately demanded a spin-off series starring the enigmatic character.
6. Kavya’s Parents: Little Things S4
Played by Navni Parihar and Rishi Deshpande
One of the reasons why people were hooked to all four seasons of Little things was how relatable Kavya and Dhruv’s parents were. Kavya’s parents were not just adorable, but their realistic banter made them two of the most heartwarming characters. How wonderful it would be to see Kavya’s parents headlining a spin-off.
7. Bharti Mandal from Ajeeb Daastaans
Played by Konkona Sensharma
Konkona Sen Sharma made a fictional character like Bharti Mandal heartwarming and realistic.
Bharti is one of the strongest female characters of 2021.
From being unapologetically bold and throwing punches at the man who harasses her to speaking up for her rights and questioning society’s flaws, Bharti is a character that we would like to see more of.
8. Pappu from Bunty Aur Babli 2
Played by Agrim Mittal
Bunty and Babli’s son Pappu has to be one of the movie’s most entertaining and funny (and memorable) characters. While the entire film makes you miss and revisit the original Bunty Aur Babli, Pappu and his satisfying life as a teenager are things we won’t regret watching as a standalone show or movie.
9. Bittu Ki Mummy from Gullak 2
Played by Sunita Rajwar
Sunita Rajwar, who essays the role of Bittu ki Mummy, is an actor who knows her job perfectly. Despite playing a character that looks deliberately stupid, Sunita Rajwar makes the character so entertaining and funny that I am sure all Gullak fans would be interested in a spin-off. Come on, won’t you be interested in Bittu Ki Mummy-The Padosi Spy tales?
10. Lily from The Bombay Begums
Played by Amruta Subhash
After making a mark in the Marathi entertainment industry, Amruta Subhash made heads turn with Gully Boy. However, she gained more popularity for her role as Lilly in the Netflix series ‘Bombay Begums’.
She effortlessly juggles between the role of a loving mother and a crusader, who is on a mission to demand respect for her and her family.
She picks up a battle against Rani, who belongs to the upper strata of society, when Reani’s son injures her son in a road accident. As a strong character, she explains that life is not just about money, but every individual, irrespective of their job and social strata, demands and deserves respect in society.
11. Balmukund Meena from ‘TVF Kota Factory.’
Played by Ranjan Raj
Ranjan Raj plays an aspirant in Kota Factory. Apart from his sincerity, he won the hearts of the audience for playing a sympathetic character.
His supportiveness and warm friendship make him one of the strongest and enjoyable characters from the show.
Everyone who loved Kota Factory wanted to see more of Meena.
